Fine Home Builders in the North Metro

Building a custom home is the largest financial decision most people make, and the question we hear most is whether it actually makes sense compared to buying existing. Here's the straight answer: a custom-built home gives you structural decisions that a spec house already made for someone else. You control the floor plan, the materials, the finish level, and the long-term performance of the structure. Powerbuilt Construction holds MN General Contractor License #BC533891 and handles residential construction from site prep through final walkthrough. Bob Powers runs the operation directly, which means you're talking to the person pulling the permits and making the calls on your job, not a project coordinator who relays messages. Call (763) 331-2247 to start the conversation.

Every custom home construction project is different, and the cost range reflects that honestly. Lot conditions, foundation type, square footage, framing complexity, mechanical systems, and interior finish level all drive the final number. A straightforward slab-on-grade build in a developed subdivision costs far less per square foot than a walkout with a full lower level and vaulted ceilings on a sloped rural lot. We don't publish ranges because a number pulled from the internet isn't your number. What we can tell you is that we run jobs on time and in budget, and that reputation is backed by 27 Google reviews averaging 4.9 stars. Every job is different, contact Powerbuilt Construction for an accurate estimate.

What a Licensed General Contractor Actually Manages

Most homeowners don't realize how many moving parts a new build has until one goes sideways.

01

Site Evaluation and Permit Pulling

We assess the lot, review municipal requirements, and pull the correct permits before a shovel moves. No shortcuts on this step, code violations on new construction follow the home forever.

02

Foundation and Framing

Structural integrity starts below grade. We work with the soil conditions on your specific lot and frame to plan, not to the minimum the inspector will pass.

03

Subcontractor Coordination

We bring in licensed mechanical, electrical, and plumbing trades we've worked with before. You don't have to find them, vet them, or schedule them yourself.

04

Budget and Schedule Management

We track both throughout the build. If something changes, you hear about it from Bob directly, not after the fact when the invoice arrives.

05

Interior Finish Selections

Flooring, cabinetry, trim, fixtures. We'll walk you through decisions in sequence so nothing gets ordered out of turn or spec'd into a conflict.

06

Final Inspections and Punch List

We don't hand over keys until the inspection card is clean and every item on the punch list is closed. That's how it's supposed to work.

How It Works

Three Phases From Your Lot to Your Front Door

Custom home building isn't complicated when the contractor is organized. Here's how Powerbuilt structures every new build.

  1. 01

    Pre-Construction

Site assessment, plan review, permit applications, and subcontractor scheduling. This phase sets the job up to run clean, and most cost overruns trace back to skipping it.

  2. 02

    Construction

Foundation, framing, rough mechanicals, insulation, drywall, and exterior envelope. Bob is on site regularly, not just for inspections.

  3. 03

    Finish and Closeout

Interior finishes, fixtures, final inspections, and punch list. We don't call a job done until the building department does too.

Why Powerbuilt

A Contractor Who Pulls Permits and Answers the Phone

Custom log home with a prow-front window wall, built by Powerbuilt Construction
There's no shortage of people in the North Metro who'll take a deposit on a custom home. The difference is what happens after. Powerbuilt Construction is a licensed, bonded general contractor, License #BC533891, not a middleman, not a franchise operation, and not a remodel company that occasionally does new builds. Bob Powers has worn all the hats on a construction site, which means he can spot a problem before it becomes a change order and explain every line item on your budget without reading off a sheet. We handle both residential and commercial new construction, which tells you something about the scope of work we're set up to manage. You won't get transferred to a sales rep or a production manager you've never met. Call (763) 331-2247 and Bob picks up.

Custom vs. Buying Existing: The Honest Tradeoff

  1. 01

    Custom costs more upfront

Land, permits, design, and construction add up to more than the purchase price of a comparable existing home in most North Metro markets. That's the truth, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

  2. 02

    Existing homes carry hidden costs

Deferred maintenance, outdated mechanicals, layouts that don't fit your life, and eventual remodels narrow the gap faster than most buyers expect. A 1970s split-level in Anoka County isn't a bargain if the roof, HVAC, and kitchen all need work.

  3. 03

    A custom build is a long-term calculation

If you're staying in a home for 15 or 20 years, building to your spec and your lot is often the better financial position. We can talk through your specific situation before you commit to anything.

Powerbuilt Construction builds custom homes throughout Anoka County and the surrounding North Metro. If you're outside this list, call and ask, we likely cover your area.

Custom Home Building: Questions Worth Asking Before You Choose a Contractor

Is it cheaper to custom build a home or buy an existing one?
In most North Metro markets right now, buying existing is cheaper on day one. A custom build costs more upfront because you're paying for the land, permits, design coordination, and all new materials and labor. The calculation changes over a 15-to-20-year horizon, especially if the existing home needs significant mechanical or structural updates. We don't push a build when it isn't the right call for your situation.
What permits are required for new home construction in Anoka County?
At minimum: a building permit, grading and drainage approval, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical permits. Some municipalities also require a soil assessment or septic design review on lots outside municipal sewer service. Powerbuilt pulls all applicable permits under License #BC533891 before breaking ground. If a contractor tells you permits aren't necessary on new construction, walk away.
How long does it take to build a custom home in the North Metro?
For a single-family custom home, eight to fourteen months from permit approval to occupancy is a realistic range in this market. Weather, supply chain conditions, and design complexity all affect the timeline. Builds with complex foundations, custom-ordered materials, or significant site work typically run toward the longer end. We give you a schedule before we start and flag delays when we see them coming, not after they've happened.
What's the difference between a custom home builder and a spec home builder?
A spec builder designs and constructs a home before a buyer is identified, then sells it finished. A custom builder works from the buyer's brief, lot selection, floor plan, finish level, and structural choices are all client-driven. Powerbuilt does custom work: your plans, your selections, your land. We don't pre-build inventory homes and we don't offer a fixed catalog of floor plans you have to choose from.
Do you handle post-frame or structural panel construction, or only stick-frame?
Stick-frame wood construction is the standard for single-family residential builds we take on. Post-frame construction, sometimes called pole barn construction, is a different structural system used more often for accessory buildings and agricultural structures. If your project involves a non-standard structural system, call us and we'll tell you directly whether it's within our scope. We won't take a job we're not equipped to build correctly.
Can Powerbuilt help with a home addition or expansion instead of a full new build?
Yes. If you already own a home and need more square footage, a home addition is often the right answer rather than building from scratch. We handle structural additions including room additions, garage additions, and second-story builds across the North Metro. If you're not sure whether to expand your current footprint or start fresh on a new lot, that's a conversation worth having before you commit either direction.
